BUILDING OR REBUILDING TIMELINE
U.S.D. 442 – NEMAHA VALLEY SCHOOLS
APRIL 26, 2007
Note: The following timeline should not be considered firm and is subject to change due to circumstances beyond any person’s control.
March 10 – fire destroys 60% to 65% of SGS, mostly in the 1938 building.
March 11 – special board meeting held to outline the plans for school for the remainder of the year.
March 19 – school for K-8 begins in relocated classrooms.
March 27 – special board meeting to discuss the planning process with the district’s architectural firm of Horst, Terrill, and Karts, of Topeka, Kansas.
April 4 – deadline for nominations and volunteers to serve on the public planning group.
April 9 – regular board meeting; public planning group appointed; update on building and planning issues.
April 26 – special board meeting to consider student placement for 2007-2008; possible insurance information available.
April 26 – A.H.R.S. given approval to do work in SGS newer additions to occupy rooms by fall.
May 2-4 – E.M.C. Insurance to make a formal insurance settlement offer.
May 4 – demolition / asbestos contractor hired.
May 6 and 9 – planning group holds public meetings to seek public input and to answer questions.
May 14 – regular board meeting; further building or rebuilding issues discussed; probable insurance settlement.
May 14 – 25 – debris and asbestos removed from site; demolition of building begins after debris is removed.
By End of May – a special meeting will be needed so that the board gives the architect direction on which to proceed drawing plans and making cost estimates.
June – meeting with bond agent if it is determined a bond may be needed. The need for a bond issue will depend upon insurance settlement, capital outlay available at the time, and the direction given to the architect.
June and July – architect meets with school staff and teachers to develop specific building needs and plans.
June and July – useable additions of SGS prepared for 2007-2008; mobile units as needed moved to property near NVHS.
August 15 – first day of classes for 2007-2008; this may need to be modified for at least K-8 depending upon factors beyond control.
October or November – a bond election held if needed; this means students will need to be in 2007-2008 facilities until the beginning of 2009-2010 school year.
